Fun

Start your engines.

Story by April Stokes

To celebrate the coming Hot August Nights, locals share their love of vintage cars.

If you're a classic car owner or just an admirer, Reno is a great place to live. Our weather affords numerous opportunities for summer cruising and there are a lot of fun day drives to take. It's not hard to find show 'n' shines or car club gatherings, including our big one-week extravaganza, Hot August Nights, which draws people and their vintage cars from all over the west.

For more information on Hot August Nights, visit hotaugustnights.net or call 356-1956.

• ‘57 CHEVROLET BELAIR
Jerry Garcia "got the classic car bug" after attending Hot August Nights in 1996. He bought his 1957 Chevrolet BelAir in 2000 and has participated in Hot August Nights ever since. In this photo, Garcia is driving under the Reno Arch with passengers William R. Davison, Jr. and Jennifer Pennington. Their father, William "Willie" Davison, Sr. is one of the founders of Hot August Nights.

• ‘57 FORD THUNDERBIRD
Native Nevadans Bob and Sharon O'Berg and their 13-year-old Lab, Misty Lynn, are pictured here with their 1957 Ford Thunderbird. Bob has been a car enthusiast for as long as he can remember. When he was 12 years old, he bought his first car, a Model T, for $1. He spent another $5 for an engine and did all the mechanical work needed to get it running. They have owned this Thunderbird since 1968 and are members of five car clubs.

• ‘66 FORD MUSTANG
Jim and Linda Carpenter pose in front of Reno High School with their 1966 Ford Mustang. Jim bought the car from his mom after it was stolen and stripped of everything except the engine. The day he drove it home he realized how powerful the engine was when he accelerated and the lawn chair he was using as a seat flew backward. He has since restored the car and the couple uses it as an every-day vehicle.

• ‘55 NASH METROPOLITAN
Gail Midtgard gets a lot of attention when she drives her 1955 Nash Metropolitan, especially when she and her husband, Bill, don clown noses and dress up the car to look like a bumper car. The Midtgards bought the car three years ago and are having a lot of fun with it. They plan to have it fully restored in the future.
